Exploring St. Paul's Cathedral: A Historic Journey with Olivia and Maisie.

Olivia Emily Louise Slatter

05/03/2025 Maisie my assistance dog, and I got invited to St Pauls Cathedral by the (Director Of Property) - Rebecca Thompson.

We are providing comprehensive assistance at St Paul's Cathedral to ensure that visitors with autism can enjoy a truly magical experience during their time at this historic landmark. Our initiative focuses on

creating an inclusive environment where individuals on the autism spectrum can feel comfortable and engaged. This involves not only adapting the physical space to accommodate sensory sensitivities but also training staff members to better understand and support the unique needs of these visitors.

In our efforts to enhance the experience for those with autism, we offer guided tours that are tailored specifically for individuals on the spectrum. These tours are designed to be sensory-friendly, incorporating quieter times and spaces where visitors can take breaks if they feel overwhelmed. We also provide visual schedules and social stories that help prepare visitors for what to expect during their visit, reducing anxiety and allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the beauty and history of St Paul's Cathedral.

Moreover, we are committed to raising awareness about what it is like to live with autism. By sharing personal stories and insights from individuals on the spectrum, we aim to foster a deeper understanding of their experiences and challenges. This includes discussing the daily hurdles they may face, such as sensory overload, social interactions, and communication barriers. By shedding light on these aspects, we hope to cultivate empathy and compassion among the general public, encouraging a more inclusive society.

In addition to our efforts at St Paul's Cathedral, we are also focused on promoting awareness and understanding of autism in the workplace. We recognise that many individuals with autism possess unique strengths and talents that can greatly benefit various industries. Therefore, we are actively working with employers to educate them on how to create supportive work environments that accommodate neurodiverse employees. This includes providing training sessions on autism awareness, offering strategies for effective communication, and advocating for reasonable adjustments that can help individuals thrive in their roles.

Through these initiatives, we aim to bridge the gap between individuals with autism and society, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to experience the wonder of St Paul's Cathedral and contribute meaningfully in the workplace. Our commitment to fostering understanding and acceptance is essential in creating a world where individuals with autism can feel valued and included, both in cultural experiences and in their professional lives.

The staff at St Pauls had the pleasure of experiencing Maisie as a therapy dog for the day, and it was very well received!
